How to clean roller shutters without a ladder

How to clean roller shutters without a ladder

Green algae, caked-on dust and bird droppings on your roller shutters don't just look bad — they shorten the life of the mechanism. Here's how to clean roller shutters safely from the ground with an Eagle Extend® water-fed pole, without balancing on a ladder.

Clean the outside safely without a ladder

Why roller shutter cleaning matters

Roller shutters are exposed to the weather day and night. Without maintenance, dirt and grit build up between the slats and in the guide rails:

Longer life: grit between the slats acts like sandpaper. It wears away the paint and can jam the roller mechanism.

Energy efficiency: a clean shutter reflects sunlight better and insulates more effectively.

A well-kept look: clean white or anthracite shutters instantly make your home look cared for. Please note: don't wait until the shutter squeaks or creaks — a preventive clean at least once a year helps avoid expensive repairs.

The power of the 5-Sided Wash Brush

Leaning out of the window or balancing on a ladder is unsafe — and you can barely apply any pressure. The solution is a water-fed telescopic pole: you stand firmly on the ground and easily reach the top of the shutter box.

For roller shutters, a standard brush often isn't enough. Eagle Extend® recommends the 5-Sided Wash Brush: with bristles on the sides, you clean not only the flat surface but also the deep grooves of the slats and the corners of the frames at the same time — without scratching the plastic. Do the maths: the pole pays for itself

Hiring a cleaning company for roller shutters and dormers can easily cost €150–250 a visit, including scaffolding or an access platform. After one or two cleans, an Eagle Extend® kit has paid for itself — and you can use the same pole for windows and window frames. Browse our value kits or start the Pole Finder.

Step by step

Roller shutter cleaning in 4 steps

With a little preparation, you can thoroughly clean the slats, rails and shutter box.

1

Pre-treat and lather up

Roller shutters are often greasy from soot and algae. Fit the SoapFlow soap dispenser between your tap and the pole and fill it with Allround Cleaner to soak off the grime.

2

Extend the pole

Stand the pole upright and extend it to the height of the shutter; the SureLock™ clamps won't slip. Click the 5-Sided Wash Brush on with the HexaLock® adapter.

3

Brush along the slats

Work from top to bottom and brush horizontally, along the length of the slats, to lift dirt out of the grooves. Don't forget the guide rails: the side bristles of the 5-Sided brush reach easily into the deep corners of the rails and box.

4

Rinse

Switch off the soap and rinse methodically from top to bottom until all the soap is gone. For the best result — especially if you're doing the windows too — use the PureFlow water softener.
